EXTENDED TOUR DESCRIPTION
A Safe, Hassle-Free Way To Visit Mt. Etna
There are so many reasons to visit Mt. Etna: It’s visible from the moon; it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site; it’s the largest active volcano in Europe; and did we mention how cool it is? Like walking on the surface of the moon, they say.
This Mt. Etna tour offers you a chance to explore the famous volcano in a safe and hassle-free way. With private transport by authorized vehicle, you won’t have to rush for cable cars or even pack your own lunch, while your local environmentalist guide knows all the best routes and areas to visit. And with added precautions like hard hats for your lava cave adventure, you can rest assured that your safety is paramount.
Get Off The Beaten Path With A Local Guide
Your tour starts in Catania, from where you’ll be whisked to Mt. Etna. Traveling with an authorized local guide has its perks; they’ll lead you along the best paths to the very edge of extinct craters to teach you about the structure and eruption pattern of the volcano.
From source to stream: You’ll visit an old lava cave, formed by lava flows after an eruption. With helmets and flashlights for every guest, you’ll be perfectly safe as you explore – and explore you should! Mt. Etna is one of a handful of volcanoes designated by the UN for study, so what better place to learn?
Hop back in your jeep and trace the outline of lava flows on your way to the Valle del Bove; a huge horse-shoe shaped depression in the volcano, measuring a whopping 5km in width and over 1km (1,000m) in depth. From here you’ll admire stunning panoramic views over the valley, taking some time to truly grasp the overwhelming size of Mt. Etna. As you reflect, your guide will tell you various theories about what caused this huge depression – from caldera collapse to explosive activity.
After a break for lunch (included in your tour and made from local, seasonal produce), your adventure continues farther afield. Since you have access to a private vehicle, you’ll be able to fit in a visit to the Dagala area, a patch of forested land surrounding the volcano, where you’ll learn why the benefits of living at the foot of a volcano often outweigh the dangers for locals.
On the other side of that argument is Piano Provenzana; the area destroyed in the 2002 Mt. Etna eruption. Visit with your guide to understand the very real threat posed by this sleeping giant.
A Complete Mt. Etna Tour
Traveling by private transport safe for the terrain, your Mt. Etna tour will cover more ground than you could have by yourself. More importantly, with your own dedicated guide, you’ll learn more. And with a small group, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to ask questions.
