Tour description

Did you know the Vatican Museums have rooms most visitors never even know exist? On this private tour, you'll see one of them.

Your guide meets you near the entrance with your tickets already arranged, so there's no line to stand in before your visit even starts. After a short introduction to what's ahead, you'll walk through the Gallery of Maps and the Raphael Rooms toward a section of the Museums closed to regular ticket holders entirely.

A Room Most Visitors Never Reach

Depending on availability, you'll step into either the Bramante Stairs, a double-helix staircase built so two lines of traffic could pass without ever crossing, or the Cappella Niccolina, a private chapel frescoed for a 15th-century pope. It's a space the standard Vatican Museums ticket simply doesn't include.

Silence Beneath the Sistine Chapel Ceiling

Your guide walks you through the story of the ceiling and the Last Judgment before you ever step inside, since the chapel itself requires silence and doesn't allow photography once you're through the door. Once inside, you're free to actually look, without commentary competing for your attention. It's one of the only moments on the tour where nobody's talking at all.

Michelangelo's Pietà and the Dome from the Floor

From there, you'll continue into St. Peter's Basilica, the largest church in the world. Standing on the nave floor and looking straight up at the dome hits differently than any photo could prepare you for. Your guide brings you face to face with Michelangelo's Pietà, the only sculpture he ever signed, before finishing at the main altar beneath Bernini's baldachin.

This is a fully private tour, just your own group and one guide for the full 3.5 hours, so the pace is entirely up to you.
