EXTENDED TOUR DESCRIPTION

A COLLECTION AS MANAGEABLE AS IT IS BEAUTIFUL

The Borghese Gallery is a true beauty, both inside and outside. Located in the 17th century home of Cardinal Borghese, it houses the art of the Cardinal himself - collected, commissioned (and even stolen!) during his lifetime. Since this is a private residence and not a sprawling palace, the Borghese Gallery is strikingly manageable. During your 2.5 hour visit you'll see all of the rooms and even have time to delve into the stories behind the artworks.

One of the most memorable paintings in the Borghese Gallery is Raphael's ‘Entombment’; a moving depiction of the grieving, including Christ’s mother, around his lifeless body. But your guide will let you in on the story that makes this piece even more moving. The matriarch of a powerful family in Perugia commissioned this piece from Raphael after her son killed most of his family members in a bid for power, then sought refuge in his mother’s home. She turned him away but changed her mind a few minutes later and ran after him – just in time to see him brutally murdered by his enemies. After that story, the theme of a mother grieving over her dead son takes on a whole new dimension!

Along with collecting (and sometimes simply stealing!) art, Cardinal Borghese hired artists to create pieces especially for him. One of his favorites? Baroque bad-boy Caravaggio. This artist who was arrested numerous times (for every crime from brawling, to throwing a plate of artichokes in his waiter’s face, to killing a man) produced darkly dramatic, realistic paintings that were light-years ahead of his time. And, as your guide will reveal to you, a secret lurks within each one. His self-portrait in ‘David and Goliath' is particularly telling.

THE UNPARALLELED JOY OF A QUIET GALLERY

Borghese Gallery tickets are a limited commodity. Only a set number of people are allowed inside at any given time, which has two results: First, the gallery is relatively peaceful at all times, particularly in comparison with the Vatican Museums; and second, tickets often sell out far in advance. We pre-reserve your tickets to guarantee that you won't be disappointed on the day.

GET THE MOST FROM YOUR VISIT WITH THE PERFECT HOST & SMALL GROUP SIZES.

Our guide was excellent, very knowledgeable and obviously so passionate about the art and collection itself, and about making sure we got the maximum from the tour. The radio system did struggle a little on occasions, not enough to spoil the experience though.

The tour of the Borghese heightened our experience of the Villa and its works of art. Using this guided tour made the reservation process simple. Maurizio's expert knowledge of the various artists and their works added depth and character to the different pieces we saw. We have a new love for Bernini and Caravaggio.

With so much to see here, our guide was invaluable in helping us to catch the highlights, while maintaining a smile, which would have challenged the best of us at times!

The tour was good, though I don't feel like a lot of artwork was covered. I know that in 2 hours it'd be impossible to cover everything, but less was covered than I think was possible. For instance, towards the end of the tour we had time, and our guide was relying on us for questions or if we wanted to see anything else. How would we know, being first-time visitors? Seems she could have used that time to check out a couple of more paintings or rooms. Our guide was very nice, and she did a good job, though I didn't get the sense that she was super knowledgeable about the artwork in the Borghese.
Our leader was knowledgeable, personable, passionate, and friendly. He made the history of the Borghese come alive and its art that much more wonderful.

My only regret is that my guest and I would have liked to tip Ferdinando for an excellent tour, however we didn't realize that we wouldn't have our purses. Otherwise we would have been prepared to properly thank him at the end of our tour.
The tour was fantastics and our guide was knowledgable and professional in every way. Please send our regards to her. I would highly recommend this tour and company to any of my family and friends.
She was really an outstanding guide. Judy
An extremely crowded day at the Borghese Gallery but Alessia did a great job in guiding us during our visit.

Our guide was excellent. He was very passionate and had incredible knowledge about the Borghese Gallery and its exhibits.
Guido was so enthusiastic, knowledgeable and humorous. He made the last day of 2017 very special. We enjoyed his information which certainly expanded our understanding of the sculptures, the meaning of baroque and his understanding of the politics that have played a role in the Borgese. We truly appreciated his knowledge and his love of the art which came through in his commentary. He is also a cat lover which was another plus😎😎😎😎

Guido was terrific. Very knowledgeable and personable. I think we would not have had such a wonderful experience at the Borghese if we had not gone with you!
We were pleased to see we had Toni as our guide again after we had her for our tour of the Vatican. She did a great job, once again. Doing this tour gave us a much better appreciation for the art than if we were to go on our own.
Antonietta is a brilliant guide - very knowldgeable with excellent organisational skills. The only criticism is about the directions to the Galleria Borghese. We did as instructed and came via the Spagna Metro - only to find that we had come out of the Metro in ' no mans land' next to a motorway with no further directions or possibility of getting into the park itself. So we retraced back into the Metro and walked up the Spanish Steps and tried that way. Again there were no directions on the road. However we entered the park, where there was an initial sign to the Galleria, but after that - nothing. The park is very large - I do not know how one is supposed to find the way without any signage. We only found the Galleria by chance by asking another woman who thought it was in a certain direction. She was going there too, and we duly followed her, literally into the undergrowth and up a grassy slope. It might be better if you advise clients how difficult it is to find this venue and make it clear that the only viable option is a taxi. N.B. We are not daft people - in our 60's with 40 years of extensive travel experience to all corners of the globe. Sadly this resulted in a very stressful start to the tour. Another couple also got lost and arrived some 30 minutes late.

Tiberio is an excellent guide. He is loves the Borghese Gallery and is passionate about the art you will see there, especially Bernini. He brings the art and artists to life by helping you gain an understanding of the masterful sculptures and paintings, as well as the stories behind them. It's well worth a visit and Tiberio is awesome. Our Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palentime Hill tour was excellent with Tiberio as well. Wish I would have booked the Vatican Museum tour with Walks of Italy. Thank you Tiberio!! Barbara from Cincinnati, Ohio.
A very enjoyable tour! Tiberio our tour guide demonstrated an abundance of knowledge and passion about the Galleria Borghese exhibition, collection and his love of the life and work of Gian Lorenzo Bernini.

Tiberio was a very passionate tour guide. Over the course of several days, my wife and I had the pleasure of taking for of your guided tours. For me this tour, and it is because of Tiberio, was the best one for the explanations and descriptions that he offered on several of the sculpture pieces. He definitely made a lasting impression on me, and helped to give me a much better understanding of the symbolism of the works of art as well as bringing attention to he details and characteristics of the sculptures. I have been signing his praises since I returned home from Europe.
