Tour description

Just one day to visit the south? Make it count!

Take the pressure off figuring out logistics on your own and make the most of your short time in this beautiful, fascinating part of Italy with our guided Pompeii and Amalfi Coast tour from Rome. You’ll embark on an in-depth exploration of the ruins at Pompeii, enjoy a relaxing drive along the beautiful Amalfi Coast, and still have time to let your hair down and explore the jewel that is the seaside town of Positano.

With air-conditioned private transport and skip-the-line tickets to Pompeii, we’ve taken care of all the details. You'll even have one of our friendly English-speaking tour leaders to accompany you throughout the day, so all you need to worry about is stocking up on limoncello and handmade shoes in Positano.

Discover world-famous ruins on our guided Pompeii tour from Rome.

Few places send shivers up your spine like Pompeii, the thriving ancient Roman city frozen in time by the volcanic eruption of 79 AD. Twenty feet of volcanic ash preserved Pompeii’s buildings, streets, mosaics, and frescoes for centuries, making it a site unlike any other in Italy: it’s a complete ancient city you can explore just as it was 2,000 years ago!

You'll meet your tour leader bright and early in central Rome and board a comfortable private minibus for the three-and-a-half-hour drive south. Along the way, you’ll hear stories that will provide context for what you’ll see and experience throughout the day. Sit back, relax, and take in the views of the Italian countryside passing by outside your window.

Once you arrive in Pompeii, your tour leader will hand you over to a certified Pompeii tour guide, carefully chosen from the ranks for their knowledge, enthusiasm and storytelling skills. Together, you’ll explore the best of Pompeii: from the Roman Forum and the brothel (if age appropriate for the group) to the world-famous plaster casts of those killed in the eruption, forever frozen in their final positions. You'll even pay a special visit to the ancient amphitheater, which most other Pompeii tours skip. Feel the site come to life with your guide’s dramatic stories and fascinating anecdotes about what life was like before and during the eruption.

Take in once-in-a-lifetime views on Italy's most scenic drive.

We time your visit to Pompeii in order to avoid the worst crowds of the day, so either before or after your Pompeii tour, you'll head further south. Revel in the stunning views and exciting twists and turns of a panoramic drive down the Amalfi Coast, hearing stories along the way about life in this beautiful region of Italy along with background information about our next stop: lovely Positano*. A pastel resort town perched on the cliffs, Positano is world-renowned for its romance and elegance.

Follow in the footsteps of Shelley, Goethe, Steinbeck, and the town’s myriad other famous visitors as you climb winding staircases and explore narrow streets. Peek into upscale boutiques, order custom-made sandals from a local artisan, cool off with a dip in the clear waters (bring your swimsuit!), or relax over a fresh seafood lunch—all surrounded by some of the most picturesque and idyllic views you’ll ever see.

Relax on a hassle-free Pompeii and Amalfi Coast tour from Rome.

From the moment you arrive at our meeting point in central Rome to when you return that evening—with a full stomach and head filled with vistas and history—you’re in excellent hands.

We’ve organized comfortable, air-conditioned transport in a small, private bus—much easier than larger coaches for navigating the winding Amalfi Coast roads. Additionally, we’ve kept our groups small, with a maximum of only 18 people for an intimate experience that will help you get to know your guide and fellow travelers.

For your Pompeii tour, we’ve arranged skip-the-line tickets so you won’t have to waste precious time waiting to get in. And if it’s busy in Pompeii in the morning (as it sometimes can be with cruise ship arrivals) we’ll be flexible, reversing the order of your day trip and heading to the coast first to be sure that you’re getting the best experience.

The most important element of any tour, though, is your guide—which is why we’ve spent years building a team of the best, most passionate, fun and enthusiastic tour leaders in the business. So sit back, relax and enjoy yourself, safe in the knowledge that you’re getting the best possible experience of southern Italy on our hassle-free Pompeii and Amalfi Coast tour from Rome.

*Please note: In the low season (November through late March), most of the businesses in Positano town close, making the town rather uneventful to visit. During this time, we will visit the town of Amalfi or Sorrento instead, where you'll have plenty of options for lunch and shopping.

I have been on the Amalfi Coast/Pompeii Tour twice; once in 2019 with my husband and now in 2024 with my daughter. It is a wonderful tour that I highly recommend. The tour guides on the bus as well as at Pompeii were friendly, fun, and provided lots of information. The views are wonderful and the lunch, views, and shopping at Positano were divine. Go and enjoy!

The “Pompeii Tour from Rome with Almalfi Coast Drive” has three excellent elements, one mediocre element, and one abysmal element. The excellent elements are the ruins of Pompeii, the official guide that joins the group in Pompeii, and the time spent (including the restaurants you can walk to) in Sorrento (when the tour is taken during the winter, otherwise it will be Amalfi). The mediocre element is the amount of driving you’ll experience (with no scenery) and the somewhat uncomfortable bus you’ll be spending about 7 hours on. The worst, and I mean almost a dealbreaker element is where you stop for a quick breakfast on the way to Pompeii. You’ll be subjected to a complete tourist trap of a minimart with prepackaged food, no marked prices, and then an astronomical bill once you’ve stood in the long line and pick out what to order. Honestly, this reflects very poorly on Walks, Devour, and City Experiences because it feels like they are not looking out for their customers and instead, subjecting them to precisely what we are paying a lot of money to NOT experience. Would it really be that hard to stop a coffee shop instead of a truck stop? There are only about 8,000 caffès to choose from between Rome and Pompeii. Seriously, what a joke and a scam. Shame on you.

Eileen was the best tour guide I’ve had. She provided just the right amount of information and her passion for Italy is exactly what I would want if I was the owner.

I greatly enjoyed this tour from Rome to Pompeii and Positano. Our tour guide was very professional, kind, and informative. He made sure to make a stop on the way there and the way back in case anyone needed a restroom or snack. He also made a point in Positano to help familiarize the group with the area. Overall, I had a very nice time and greatly enjoyed the Pompeii portion especially!
