Discover Orvieto - All Inclusive Day Trip from Rome

Extended Description

We love Orvieto… and we think you will, too! A hidden gem, this tranquil, beautiful medieval hilltop town—which happens to offer everything from some of Italy’s most important art to ancient underground galleries and caves—is just 45 minutes from Rome. That makes it the perfect day trip from the busy capital!

To make your day as fun and stress-free as possible, your guide will meet you while you’re still in Rome. Don’t worry about booking train tickets, or figuring out the confusing Termini train station… we’ve got you covered!

As your train sweeps through beautiful countryside, your guide lets you in on Orvieto’s secrets: its 3,000-year-old history, its importance, and what makes it so special today. From there, it’s a fun (and pretty) cable car ride up into the hill town. Drink in the views—they’re truly spectacular! As your guide regales you with stories of what life in this little town is like—from the festivals that every local lives for to what it means to be in a “contrada”—you’ll stroll through the medieval streets. Visit the churches of San Andrea and Bartolomeo and San Domenico, St. Patrick’s Well (a 16th-century well with bizarre origins… and no fewer than 20 stories!), and the medieval Palazzo dei Sette.

Once you’ve gotten a grasp of the gorgeous town, it’s time to go… underground! Orvieto hides a fascinating secret: Beneath its medieval streets and buildings lies a labyrinth of rooms, caverns, and cellars. Since the ancient Etruscans were the first to tunnel underground here, they date back a full 3,000 years—and are a fascinating glimpse of just how ingenious the ancients really were!

Enjoy a delicious meal at one of Orvieto’s loveliest, most traditional trattorie. You’ll get to taste authentic Umbrian food, including the town’s famous salumi and cheese… as well as local wine! (lunch is included in the tour). Learn what makes the local food so special from your guide, something that’s way more fun when you can taste while learning! After, you have the option to work off all that delicious food by climbing the next-door Torre del Moro. Bring your camera: The view of Orvieto and the rolling hills beyond is spectacular.

But we’re saving best for last. Now’s the time to visit Orvieto’s famous Duomo, the stunning, elaborate church in the middle of the town which boasts a world famous Gothic facade. Your guide will even take you into the Chapel of San Brizio, frescoed with extraordinary, almost modern-seeming scenes of the Last Judgment. Although some of them look almost like they came out of a comic book, they date to the 15th century… and had a huge influence on Michelangelo for his own Last Judgment in the Sistine Chapel!

Finally, relax in the piazza of the Duomo and—over complimentary Vin Santo (dessert wine) and traditional cantucci (local biscuits)—soak in the town’s beauty and tranquility. Any last, burning questions about Orvieto, ask away. This is your tour… and your Umbrian experience!
