ID card<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Although you generally have to be an<strong> E.U. citizen<\/strong> to get student or senior discounts, we&#8217;ve encountered a number of places across Italy, most notably the (expensive) Vatican museums, <strong>where that&#8217;s not the case.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So always ask. And if you are a European citizen, then don&#8217;t make the mistake of leaving your I.D. in the hotel: <strong>Nearly every site and museum<\/strong> gives child, student, and senior-citizen discounts.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_few_pieces_of_tissue%E2%80%A6_that_can_double_as_toilet_paper\"><\/span>A few pieces of tissue&#8230; that can double as toilet paper<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>You don&#8217;t really need to bring this from home, of course &#8212;<strong>Italy does have toilet paper<\/strong>&#8211;but it&#8217;s a <strong>smart thing for ladies,<\/strong> particularly, to throw in their purses before leaving the hotel in the morning.<\/p>\n<p>Why? Well, while 95% of the bathrooms you&#8217;ll use at cafes or restaurants are perfectly well-stocked, <strong>some are&#8230; not.<\/strong> Enough said &#8212; so just keep it in mind. (Along those lines, also <strong>consider bringing hand sanitizer).<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Comfortable_walking_shoes\"><\/span>Comfortable walking shoes<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Given the amount of walking you&#8217;ll do, especially on uneven surfaces, <strong>sturdy and comfortable shoes<\/strong> are essential. You&#8217;ll be doing <strong>a lot of walking in Italy.<\/strong> Especially if that&#8217;s not something you&#8217;re used to, <strong>make sure you have the right footwear.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What that comfy pair is is <strong>different for everyone,<\/strong> and doesn&#8217;t necessarily have to be gym sneakers. It might be comfy sandals, cute flats, and, in winter, leather boots can all work, too.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Just make sure that,<\/strong> whatever the pair is, they&#8217;re<strong> broken in<\/strong> &#8211; and give them a &#8220;dry run&#8221; by walking in them for three or four straight hours first. The bag went tumbling&#8230; and the resulting pile-up at the bottom almost resulted in a pile-up of <em>people <\/em>(and a couple of hospital visits).<\/p>\n<p>But bringing <strong>only what you can carry<\/strong> isn&#8217;t just a safety issue. It&#8217;ll make your entire trip<strong> <em>much <\/em>more enjoyable.<\/strong> That&#8217;s especially true in Italy, where there tends to be lots of unexpected luggage-lugging (many old <em>palazzos<\/em>, like the kind that have B&amp;Bs and apartments, don&#8217;t have elevators, and not all train and metro stations have escalators or elevators, either).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Keep it light,<\/strong> and you&#8217;ll arrive at your destination much, much happier (and less sweaty).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15088\" style=\"width: 1450px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15088\" class=\"wp-image-15088 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.walksofitaly.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Positano.jpg\" alt=\"Positano\" width=\"1440\" height=\"810\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-15088\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Italy is full of cobble stones and narrow streets, so be careful with what type of luggage you bring.<\/p><\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Still_under_debate\"><\/span><strong>Still under debate<br \/>\n<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Money_pouch\"><\/span>Money pouch<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Lots of travelers swear by them, and they&#8217;re definitely one of the<strong> most secure ways to stash your cash<\/strong> (just remember to keep the pouch hidden <em>underneath <\/em>your shirt). That said, you&#8217;ll never see an Italian walking around Rome or Florence with one, and every time you go to take out your money, you have to unbutton your shirt to do it.<\/p>\n<p>What we prefer?
