Photo courtesy of Wikimedia Commons.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In a masterstroke of archaeological detective work, the curators and artisans of the Florence museum <a href=\"https:\/\/duomo.firenze.it\/en\/home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Il Grande Museo Del Duomo<\/a>\u00a0have reconstructed the original fa\u00e7ade and put many of its beautiful sculptures on display. By painstakingly studying a single 16<sup>th<\/sup> century drawing by Bernardo Pocetti, artists and researchers rendered a scale model of the lost fa\u00e7ade from resin and marble dust.<\/p>\n<p>In the same room they have restored Lorenzo Ghiberti\u2019s \u201cGates of Heaven\u201d Baptistery doors to their original position vis a vis the facade in order to fully recreate the original vision and iconographic relationship between the Cathedral\u00a0and Baptistery.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8409\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/walksofitaly.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Facciata_duomo_di_firenze.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8409\" class=\"wp-image-8409 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.walksofitaly.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Facciata_duomo_di_firenze.jpg\" alt=\"This is Bernardo Pocetti's original drawing that was used to help reconstruct the original facade. Photo courtesy of Wikimedia Commons.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The fa\u00e7ade\u2019s unveiling to the public coincides with the re-opening of one of Florence\u2019s most stunning but overlooked museums. The organization behind it, the Opera del Duomo, has\u00a0overseen construction and refurbishments on the Duomo for over 700 years.<\/p>\n<p>During this time they\u00a0have collected a horde of Medieval and Renaissance masterpieces like none other on the planet\u00a0including\u00a0a Piet\u00e1 by Michelangelo and those Baptistery doors whose recreations sit in the Piazza del Duomo behind a permanent crowd of selfie-taking tourists. But despite all its incredible art, the museum has long sat semi-forgotten in a corner of the Piazza del Duomo, seemingly under constant refurbishment and mostly overlooked by tourists on the normal Florence museum trail going from the Duomo to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walksofitaly.com\/florence-tours\/florence-walking-tour-david\/\">Accademia<\/a>, and finally the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walksofitaly.com\/blog\/attractions\/the-uffizi-gallery-florence\">Uffizi<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"An_unlikely_solution_%E2%80%93_a_parking_garage\"><\/span>An unlikely solution &#8211; a parking garage!<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The problem, museum director Monsignor Timothy Verdon explained in a press conference, was not getting ahold of great art, it was \u201chow to exhibit more than 100 fragments of the cathedral\u2019s lost medieval facade&#8230; forty statues, many monumental in scale, and some sixty architectural elements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To accommodate this kingly collection the museum has expanded to more than double its old size thanks to the acquisition of an old parking garage. In doing so, it has become half gallery, half architectural immersion experience.<\/p>\n<p>The innumerable parts of the old Cathedral reassert themselves in space and time, creating within the blank slate of the museum a sort of shadow cathedral that never was, but could have been if history had just been slightly different. Find out what to see and how to see it below.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Things_to_see_in_Il_Grande_Museo_Del_Duomo\"><\/span>Things to see in Il Grande Museo Del Duomo:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Lorenzo_Ghibertis_two_masterpieces\"><\/span>Lorenzo Ghiberti\u2019s two masterpieces<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The more accomplished of the two bronze doors depicting biblical scenes is the one facing the reconstructed Duomo fa\u00e7ade. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walksofitaly.com\/blog\/art-culture\/michelangelo-works-and-paintings\">Michelangelo<\/a> himself called it the \u201cGates of Paradise\u201d and it\u2019s this door\u2019s copy that draws the crowds in the Piazza. Perhaps the more historically significant door is the <em>North Door<\/em>. When Ghiberti won the commission for it he beat (and seriously annoyed) the up-and-coming Filippo Brunneleschi who was forced to turn his attentions to the now-iconic dome.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Donatellos_Penitent_Magdalen_Maddalena_Penitente\"><\/span>Donatello\u2019s Penitent Magdalen (<em>Maddalena Penitente<\/em>)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyartmagazine.com\/donatellos-mary-magdalene\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">This unusual wood sculpture <\/a>was unprecedented in its time for depicting a hyper realistic, almost macabre, image of a very emaciated Mary Magdalene. Licensed under CC BY 2.5 via Commons.<\/p><\/div>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Michelangelos_Other_Pieta\"><\/span>Michelangelo\u2019s Other Pieta<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Visitors to St. Peter\u2019s know you can\u2019t miss Michelangelo\u2019s depiction of loss and motherly sorrow in the Piet\u00e1, but not all of the artist\u2019s works were resounding successes. As an old man Michelangelo returned to the scene of the Jesus\u2019 crucifixion to begin work on another Piet\u00e1 intended for his own grave. Things apparently did not go well &#8211; he eventually took a hammer to the piece and left it unfinished. Despite, or perhaps because of its shortcomings, this sculpture offers a unique and intimate insight into the mind of a master.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Gallery_of_Brunelleschis_Dome\"><\/span>The Gallery of Brunelleschi\u2019s Dome<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>If you don\u2019t know the story behind one of history\u2019s great architectural feats (or especially if you do) you have to see the section of the museum dedicated to the creation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/duomo.firenze.it\/en\/discover\/dome\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cathedral\u2019s titanic dom<\/a>e.
