The name refers to the five picturesque seaside villages\u2014<strong data-start=\"111\" data-end=\"181\">Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore<\/strong>\u2014that cling to the rugged cliffs of Italy\u2019s Ligurian Riviera. So getting to visit these towns outside of the high season can be a real treat!<\/p>\n<p>However, it&#8217;s worth keeping in mind that these villages are usually best appreciated in non-rainy weather. When we visited the Cinque Terre last March, for example, the weather was clear and beautiful; because of recent rains, however, only two of the paths were open during our four-day stay.<\/p>\n<p>Before you go, you can <a href=\"http:\/\/www.parconazionale5terre.it\/Esentieri-outdoor.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">check to see which hiking paths are currently open<\/a>, but be aware that this changes on a day-to-day basis.<\/p>\n<p>On the plus side, while rain (or even snow) is more likely in the winter months, it&#8217;s by no means guaranteed; there are plenty of cold, sunny days this time of year, too! Or visit <strong data-start=\"1712\" data-end=\"1738\">Levanto or Portovenere<\/strong>, which remain peaceful and charming in the off season.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"496\" data-end=\"525\"><strong data-start=\"496\" data-end=\"523\">Visit Local Churches and Museums<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"526\" data-end=\"756\">\n<li data-start=\"526\" data-end=\"636\">\n<p data-start=\"528\" data-end=\"636\"><strong data-start=\"528\" data-end=\"576\">Church of San Giovanni Battista (Monterosso)<\/strong> \u2013 admire its historic architecture and interior artworks.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"526\" data-end=\"636\">\n<p data-start=\"528\" data-end=\"636\"><strong data-start=\"639\" data-end=\"683\">Santa Margherita di Antiochia (Vernazza)<\/strong> \u2013 located near the harbor, this church dates back to the 14th century.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul data-start=\"803\" data-end=\"1108\">\n<li data-start=\"803\" data-end=\"872\">\n<p data-start=\"805\" data-end=\"872\"><strong data-start=\"805\" data-end=\"835\">Museo Civico di Monterosso<\/strong> \u2013 showcases local history and art.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"873\" data-end=\"972\">\n<p data-start=\"875\" data-end=\"972\"><strong data-start=\"875\" data-end=\"899\">Castello di Vernazza<\/strong> \u2013 a medieval castle with panoramic views of the village and coastline.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"973\" data-end=\"1108\">\n<p data-start=\"975\" data-end=\"1108\"><strong data-start=\"975\" data-end=\"1014\">Via dell\u2019Amore Museum (Riomaggiore)<\/strong> \u2013 learn about the famous coastal trail and its history (check accessibility during winter).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Photography and relaxation<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1415\" data-end=\"1592\">\n<li data-start=\"1415\" data-end=\"1540\">Capture the villages in soft winter light and misty coastal conditions, this season is just perfect for photographers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1377\" data-end=\"1414\"><strong data-start=\"1377\" data-end=\"1412\">Sample Local Cuisine Indoors<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1415\" data-end=\"1592\">\n<li data-start=\"1415\" data-end=\"1540\">\n<p data-start=\"1417\" data-end=\"1540\">Cozy up in small <strong data-start=\"1434\" data-end=\"1459\">family-run trattorias<\/strong> and enjoy local specialties such as <strong data-start=\"1496\" data-end=\"1537\">pesto, seafood, and Ligurian focaccia<\/strong>. Obviously there are others that stay open, to service the locals and winter visitors.\u00a0While this means fewer options, it also provides a more personal experience, allowing visitors to enjoy the towns more like the locals, without the usual peak tourism crowds.<\/p>\n<p>So, if you\u2019re visiting the Cinque Terre off season, it\u2019s a good idea to <strong data-start=\"79\" data-end=\"122\">plan ahead for meals and accommodation<\/strong>. Research which restaurants and hotels remain open, make reservations where possible, and consider bringing snacks or picnic supplies for hikes between villages.
