Even the names don&#8217;t mean what you might expect. Take a story we heard from one traveler to Italy. Since she was familiar with the &#8220;Italian&#8221; lingo of coffee from Starbucks, she thought she was all set when she arrived in Italy and, proudly, ordered a &#8220;<em>latte.&#8221;\u00a0<\/em>The server looked at her funny. &#8220;<em>Latte? Caldo o freddo?&#8221;\u00a0<\/em>(Hot or cold?). She spoke a little Italian, so it was her turn to look at <em>him\u00a0<\/em>funny: <em>&#8220;C<\/em><em>aldo,\u00a0<\/em>of course!&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>He disappeared for a moment, came back, and handed her a cup of exactly what she&#8217;d asked for\u2014hot milk.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t want that to be you? They do: a <em>coffee<\/em> drinking problem! That&#8217;s because <strong>a &#8220;bar&#8221; is actually what we would call a &#8220;cafe.&#8221;<\/strong> (And, confusingly, a\u00a0<em>caff\u00e8\u00a0<\/em>actually means a &#8220;coffee&#8221;&#8230; but more on that later).<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Most_Italians_drink_coffee_standing_at_the_bar\"><\/span>Most Italians drink coffee standing at the bar<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This was a tip from our post on <a href=\"http:\/\/walksofitaly.com\/blog\/travel-tips\/how-not-to-get-ripped-off-eating-in-italy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">how not to get ripped off eating in Italy<\/a>: <strong>Unless you\u00a0<em>really\u00a0<\/em>need to rest those feet, make like an Italian and order, and drink, your coffee at the bar.<\/strong> It&#8217;s often half or a third the price of sitting at a table, especially near a tourist site. A cappuccino in the afternoon in Italy is simply not done.<\/p><\/div>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"At_the_bar_you_usually_have_to_pay_for_your_coffee_before_ordering_it\"><\/span>At the bar, you usually have to pay for your coffee <em>before\u00a0<\/em>ordering it<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Not every cafe actually enforces this rule. But as a rule of thumb, it&#8217;s better to go to the cash register first and say what you&#8217;re going to get\u2014&#8221;<em>due caff\u00e8,&#8221; &#8220;un cornetto,&#8221;\u00a0<\/em>etc.\u2014and pay first. Take the receipt you&#8217;re given and <em>don&#8217;t<\/em> throw it out; that&#8217;s what you bring to the bar with you, and hand to the server, to get served. Especially at local cafes that aren&#8217;t used to tourists, you might just get a<em>\u00a0very\u00a0<\/em>funny look! Italians have a thing about drinking cappuccino after noon. <strong>Why don&#8217;t Italians drink cappuccino after lunch<\/strong>? Well, it&#8217;s just not done (some say it&#8217;s because the milk and foam makes it a replacement for a meal, and all that dairy upsets the digestion). You don&#8217;t have to say &#8220;espresso&#8221; when you order (although if they know you&#8217;re a tourist, they might ask just to make sure). Just two days ago, we saw a family react with shock when the &#8220;<em>caff\u00e8&#8221;\u00a0<\/em>they ordered came\u2014as espresso, rather than filtered coffee. Oops!<\/li>\n<li><em>Cappuccino:<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em>Espresso topped up with hot, foamed milk. It&#8217;s named after the\u00a0<em>Cappuccini,\u00a0<\/em>or Capuchin monks, because of the color of their hoods.<\/li>\n<li><em>Caff\u00e8 macchiato:\u00a0<\/em>This means a &#8220;spotted&#8221; or &#8220;stained&#8221; coffee, and in this case, it&#8217;s spotted \u00a0with a splash of hot milk.<\/li>\n<li><em>Latte macchiato:\u00a0<\/em>Guess what this means? &#8220;Spotted milk&#8221;\u2014in this case, a lot of milk with a spot of coffee.<\/li>\n<li><em>Caff\u00e8 americano:\u00a0<\/em>American-style filter coffee doesn&#8217;t exist here. Instead, if you order an &#8220;American coffee,&#8221; you&#8217;ll get Italy&#8217;s best approximate: espresso with hot water added.<\/li>\n<li><em>Caff\u00e8 lungo:\u00a0<\/em>A &#8220;long&#8221; coffee, i.e. with more water. It&#8217;s different than an\u00a0<em>americano\u00a0<\/em>because the difference actually happens at the espresso machine: when the espresso is actually being pulled, the process is slowed down so there&#8217;s twice as much water involved.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_1928\" style=\"width: 1010px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1928\" class=\"wp-image-1928 size-full\" title=\"Enjoy your coffee!\" src=\"https:\/\/www.walksofitaly.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/coffee-at-cafe-with-people-in-the-background1.jpg\" alt=\"cup of coffee in a tall glass on a bar next to rows of plates\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.walksofitaly.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/coffee-at-cafe-with-people-in-the-background1.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.walksofitaly.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/coffee-at-cafe-with-people-in-the-background1-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1928\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">When ordering a cappuccino in Italy, try it in a glass.<\/p><\/div>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Help_yourself_to_the_cremina\"><\/span>Help yourself to the\u00a0<em>cremina<\/em><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Except for icy, summery drinks like c<em>aff\u00e8 shakerato <\/em>(coffee &#8220;shaken up&#8221; with ice and sugar), coffee doesn&#8217;t usually come with any sugar in it. Instead, it&#8217;s up to you to add sugar, usually found in either jars or packets there on the counter. Some places also will have tubs of\u00a0<em>cremina,\u00a0<\/em>which is foam whipped with sugar. If you want (and aren&#8217;t grossed out by the communal tub), you can spoon some right into your coffee to give it a sweet little kick.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"And%E2%80%A6_enjoy\"><\/span>And&#8230; enjoy!<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>You&#8217;re now ready<strong> to experience coffee culture in Italy like an Italian<\/strong>! It&#8217;s one of the best, most authentic food experiences you can have. Not to mention one of the cheapest: across the country, a <em>caff\u00e8\u00a0<\/em>taken at the bar costs about 1 Euro.
