The birthplace of St. Francis (and, therefore, a major site of pilgrimage for Franciscans and other Catholics), this medieval city on a hill deserves a spot on\u00a0<em>anyone&#8217;s\u00a0<\/em>itinerary. The frescoes in the Basilica of St. Francis are some of the most beautiful, and important, early Renaissance frescoes in the world (here&#8217;s more on <a href=\"http:\/\/walksofitaly.com\/blog\/vatican\/renaissance-frescoes-in-italy-beyond-michelangelo-sistine-chapel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">why they&#8217;re so great<\/a>, plus photos). The area&#8217;s famous Sagrantino di Montefalco has DOCG protection (here&#8217;s more on <a href=\"http:\/\/walksofitaly.com\/blog\/food-and-wine\/guide-to-italian-wines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">what DOCG means and how to read an Italian wine label<\/a>), and you can do tastings at nearby vineyards or even right in town. Its Duomo has vibrant frescoes by the early Renaissance master Filippo Lippi, and Roman ruins are scattered throughout the town. One of our favorite views, though, is of this bridge, the Ponte delle Torri, which is a 13th-century aqueduct built on ancient Roman foundations.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Perugia\"><\/span>Perugia<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_3078\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/walksofitaly.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Perugia-for-web.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3078\" class=\" wp-image-3078 \" title=\"Perugia, Umbria\" src=\"http:\/\/walksofitaly.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Perugia-for-web-1024x680.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"318\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3078\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Perugia, one of the loveliest cities in Umbria<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The capital of Umbria, Perugia is one of the region&#8217;s most major cities, with some 170,000 residents. It&#8217;s also lovely! With its cobblestoned streets and graceful palaces, Perugia has a wonderful atmosphere. It also boasts one of the most important art galleries in Umbria, filled with medieval and Renaissance masterpieces. And it&#8217;s home to the annual Umbrian Jazz Festival.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Narni\"><\/span>Narni<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_3077\" style=\"width: 249px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/walksofitaly.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Narni.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3077\" class=\" wp-image-3077 \" title=\"Narni, a lovely town in Umbria\" src=\"http:\/\/walksofitaly.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Narni.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"239\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3077\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Narni, Umbria<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The tiny, hilltop town of Narni is worth exploring for its beauty, wonderful food, great views, and fascinating churches, including one that has a hidden underground that was used by the Church as prison cells during the Inquisition!
