The ground becomes water. The train crosses the causeway over the lagoon and the city appears, sitting on the surface of the sea. The train arrives at Venezia Santa Lucia station, which sits right at the entrance to the old city on the Grand Canal. Murano and Burano, the islands known for glassblowing and colourful fishing houses, are each a 45-minute boat ride from the centre and require a dedicated trip. Getting slightly lost is not a mistake, it is the point. The signage points toward San Marco but the streets between do not follow a grid.
