Whether or not it&#8217;s the skull of the martyr who inspired Valentine&#8217;s Day is a matter of some debate, to put it mildly. Depending on who&#8217;s counting,<strong> there are between 12 and 14 Saint Valentines! <\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Included in this number were:<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>A Spanish hermit <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>A woman named Valentina<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Valentine of Rome<\/strong>, <strong>a<\/strong><strong>\u00a0priest in Rome during the reign of Emperor Claudius II<\/strong> (around 270 CE). He is said to have been arrested for secretly marrying Christian couples and aiding Christians persecuted under Roman law. Claudius II supposedly liked Valentine at first but later condemned him to death after Valentine tried to convert the emperor.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Valentine of Terni, a<\/strong> <strong>bishop in Interamna<\/strong> (modern-day Terni, Italy), also martyred under Emperor Claudius II. He was known for healing the sick and performing miracles. According to legend, he healed the blind daughter of a jailer, and before his execution, he sent her a letter signed &#8220;Your Valentine.&#8221; This may be the origin of Valentine\u2019s Day love notes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Valentine of Africa, a<\/strong> <strong>lesser-known Valentine mentioned in early martyrologies.<\/strong> He was martyred in the Roman province of Africa (modern-day Tunisia or Algeria). One of these two was martyred on February 14th 269, thus giving us the date for his eponymous day.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_a_Pagan_Festival_Inspired_Valentines_Day_Traditions\"><\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW227580894 BCX0\">How<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW227580894 BCX0\"> a Pagan Festival <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW227580894 BCX0\">Inspired<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW227580894 BCX0\">Valentine\u2019s<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW227580894 BCX0\"> Day <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW227580894 BCX0\">Traditions<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>After he was killed, Valentine&#8217;s remains sat in the <strong>Catacombs<\/strong> <strong>of San Valentino<\/strong> for a while before moving to Santa Maria in Cosmedin (or the Basilica of Saint Valentine in Terni, if you support the claim of the <em>other<\/em> Valentine) where they were visited by pilgrims for many years. However, he has a lot to do with English literature and that&#8217;s how he created <strong>a connection between Saint Valentine and love celebrations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The first written connection between love and Valentine&#8217;s Day appears in his poem, <em>Parlement of Foules<\/em>, written in the late 14th century. <strong>Chaucer appears to have invented the correlation that Valentine&#8217;s Day equals love<\/strong> and chalked it up to poetic license. On February 14, women give <strong>chocolates<\/strong> (either romantic &#8220;honmei-choco&#8221; or obligatory &#8220;giri-choco&#8221;) to men. Men also send humorous poems or rhymes called &#8220;gaekkebrev&#8221; anonymously, and women try to guess their admirers&#8217; identities.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Philippines\"><\/span><strong>Philippines<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Valentine&#8217;s Day is<strong> a popular date for mass weddings.<\/strong> Hundreds or even thousands of couples gather in public spaces to tie the knot in ceremonies often sponsored by the government.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Brazil\"><\/span><strong>Brazil<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Brazilians celebrate <em>Dia dos Namorados<\/em> (&#8220;Lovers&#8217; Day&#8221;) on June 12 rather than February 14.
