Twilight City Stroll – Welcome to Rome
Extended Description
Hello, postcard shots! See the picturesque side of Rome right from the start at the world-famous Spanish Steps. The longest, widest, and most-recognized staircase in Europe, the steps also have been immortalized in countless films and stories. (A Roman Holiday fan? It’s where Gregory Peck “bumped into” Audrey Hepburn). Don’t hesitate to have your guide snap a photo of you here… part of the perks of having a maximum group size of 12!
But you’ll really feel like you’re having your movie moment at the Trevi Fountain. Here is where Fellini’s lovers cavorted in La Dolce Vita, where three American girls tossed coins in Three Coins in a Fountain, and where Hepburn grabbed a gelato in Roman Holiday. You won’t get to take a dip today—at the pain of a hefty fine!—but you will get to toss in your coin. And, yes, you will also enjoy a refreshing Italian gelato. Don’t resist; after all, it’s on us! Consider it part of your welcome to Rome.
It’s your chance to discover Rome’s many hidden secrets. Like the Area Sacra. Sunk into the middle of several traffic-filled streets, it’s one ruin that many visitors just walk right by. We promise you never will again… especially after hearing the bloody tale of how Caesar was killed on March 15, 44 B.C., right on this spot!
The most evocative ancient site in Rome, though, is the Pantheon. Not a ruin, but a building, it’s Rome’s best-preserved ancient structure—and you can still experience it almost exactly as ancient Romans did 1,900 years ago. (Going in the evening, one of the few times that the Pantheon is not crammed with tourists, also helps!) In fact, we can’t express enough just how much the Pantheon is a must-see. And yet we know that, without a guide to help you understand exactly what makes this building so special, you might not get the chills that you should get when you walk inside. We promise that you will when your guide unlocks its secrets!
At Piazza Navona, discover Rome’s other legendary fountain, Bernini’s Fountain of the Four Rivers, itself immortalized (more or less!) in the movie Angels and Demons. Chat with your guide about why the Nile is pulling a hood over his head, where that obelisk came from, and why the piazza has such a strange shape. (It’s not rectangular…) And, throughout your walk, get all of your questions answered, from where to get a great pizza to whether you should tip your cab driver. It’s your chance to mine an insider for knowledge!
