For centuries, travelers have been drawn by Italy's hospitality, history, art, food, and wine. Yet they continue to overlook the region that boasts the best of all of these: southern Italy.
Puglia, located in the “heel” of the boot of Italy, offers beauty, culture and some of Italy’s best cuisine. The sun-soaked, olive-strewn region has been settled by kings, saints, and nobles—but remains ignored by tourists.
Come with us to explore the authentic Italy, an Italy where a town’s central piazza is the heart of its social life, where old men play cards under umbrellas on sunny days, where lines, crowds and price-gouging are unheard of, and where outsiders are welcomed with open arms… and maybe just a little suspicion.
Our three-day tour of the region includes:
-
Lecce: Often called “Florence of the south,” Lecce is a gem of Baroque art and architecture. We’ll explore the city’s best palaces and churches, eat in its most traditional restaurants, visit the ancient Roman theater, and you'll even have the opportunity to spend the night in a historic noble palazzo. There's free time to explore the town on your own—or, if you prefer, take a dip in the Salento’s clear, turquoise water.
-
Alberobello: Such a unique coastal village that it’s been named a UNESCO heritage site, Alberobello is famous for its ancient cone-shaped houses, and your guide bring to light the mystery behind them. You can spend a night in one of these trulli, but not before tucking away a home-cooked dinner at a countryside masseria.
-
Castle of Frederick II: Built in the 13th century, the castle is one of Italy’s best-preserved and, with its octagonal shape, most unique. Learn about what the Middle Ages meant for Puglia and all of Italy, why Frederick II was so important, and the darker tales of the castle’s past.
You can’t understand the “real” Italy without an appreciation for—and comfort in—Italy’s south. Feel at home in Puglia, southern Italy’s gem, with Walks of Italy.
Note: Price quoted includes all transportation within Puglia (both private car and train costs), all full-day guiding services, all entrance fees. Price does not include travel to/from the Puglia region, two nights accommodation, or food and drink.
