Full-Day Excursion from Livorno

One of the most beautiful regions in the world, Tuscany isn’t only breathtaking—it also has a lot to offer. Florence, of course, is its most famous city, a Renaissance fantasy of art, architecture, shopping and food. If you want a taste of authentic Tuscan life (and cuisine), though, that’s only one option. Here are some of our favorite locations:

Florence: World-famous for its beauty, Florence has inspired Michelangelo, Dante, even Ferragamo… and now you! The cradle of the Italian Renaissance, Florence today has some of the most important and incredible art and architecture in the entire Western world, from Michelangelo’s David to Brunelleschi’s dome. If shopping is more your thing, don’t worry: This is the city where Italian high fashion was born, not to mention where the crafts of making paper, glass, silver, leather, and gold still adhere to time-tested artisanal tradition! For the best of Tuscan art, history, and shopping, Florence is your destination.

Siena: Once upon a time, Siena, a powerful republic in its own right, was Florence’s main rival. Today, it’s a city that remains Florence’s rival in charm and beauty… but hasn’t yet been discovered by nearly as many tourists! Explore Siena’s unique main square, where the famous Palio races are held twice a year in a tradition that harkens back to the Middle Ages. Visit its medieval frescoes in the Palazzo Pubblico, including the famous allegories of “good” and “bad” government. Gawk at its gorgeous Duomo—one of the most stunning in all of Italy—with its contributions from artists as renowned as Bernini, Donatello and Michelangelo and its vibrant Piccolomini Library, which you’ll love if you like the Sistine Chapel. Or just wander through Siena’s medieval stone streets, wondering if your driver has accidentally delivered you… back in time! Walks of Italy is happy to organize private customized tours of Siena. Pisa: Ah, what’s a trip to Italy without a photo of the famous Leaning Tower? As enchanting as the Leaning Tower of Pisa is, though (and it really is incredible… and well worth the photo op!), there’s much more to Pisa than that, including 20 historic churches, numerous palaces, and a beautiful river setting. If you’re a fan of art, don’t miss the Museo Nazionale di San Matteo, with medieval works of art by masters including Pisano and Masaccio. Walks of Italy is happy to organize private customized tours of Pisa. Simply email us at info@walksofitaly.com

Lucca: Tranquil, elegant Lucca is a great glimpse into Tuscan town life away from the crowds. Still ringed by Renaissance city walls (that, uniquely, you can go for a stroll or bike ride on!), the city has retained its historic heritage in other ways, too. It has some of the prettiest cathedrals you’ll ever see, a piazza that retains the shape of the ancient theater it was built into, and charming small shops and bakeries. If you’re a music-lover, this is your town: the famous Puccini was born here, as were Nicalao Dorati, Francesco Geminiani, Gioseffo Guami, Luigi Boccherini, and Alfredo Catalani. Tuscan vineyards: To really get off the beaten path and experience authentic Tuscany, head to a vineyard. Wine is one of the proudest products of this region, and many of the world’s most revered wines, including Brunello, Chianti, Super Tuscans, and Vino Nobile, all come exclusively from here. Despite their international renown, though, these wines get their start at small vineyards, where the grapes are lovingly watched over and harvested by locals. Visit one of these privately-owned vineyards to experience the process for yourself. And no, we won’t take you to a vineyard where all of the tour buses go—as always, we’ve hand-picked places that are truly authentic and off-the-beaten path, ensuring that you’re really seeing the best that Italy has to offer. Walks of Italy is happy to organize private customized excursion to a Tuscan vineyard. Simply email us at info@walksofitaly.com
