Florence City Walk & The David

Extended Description

Welcome to Florence! Even if—in fact, especially if—you’re short on time, we at Walks of Italy think it’s worth making the most of your hours here by getting an orientation to this extraordinary city right from the start.

Throughout this relaxed and lovely walk (which will have plenty of stops for photo ops!), our guide will give you lots of insiderstips and info. Make the most of your small group size—unlike most companies in Florence, we have a maximum cap of 12 people per tour—by asking all about which restaurants are best or how to haggle at the leather market.

But, of course, you’ll hit the highlights, too. The Duomo, the beautiful, soaring church that marks the real birth of Renaissance architecture, is one can’t-miss sight. And we bet that, while you might have found it pretty before, you’ll be truly wowed after you know just what it took for Brunelleschi to build! If the Duomo symbolizes Florence’s importance to art and architecture, the Piazza della Signoria represents the city’s political dominance. The Florentine government ruled here from Palazzo Vecchio…and so did the Medici! Hear tales of intrigue and treachery and learn all about the larger-than-life characters who once walked these streets, from Michelangelo to the “Magnificent Lorenzo de’ Medici.

Our city walk will also take you onto the famed Ponte Vecchio, with its jewelers and art dealers, to Orsanmichele, famed for its statues by Donatello, Verocchio and Ghilberti, and through Florence's leather market—rub the snout of “il Porcellino” and ensure your return to Florence!

We will conclude inside the Accademia Gallery with Michelangelo's statues of the Slaves and his David. We’ve already bought your tickets and reserved your privilege entrance for you, so there’s no stress or super-long lines. And, just as we make getting in simple, we’ll make what it’s all about simple, too. Renaissance art doesn’t need to be stuffy and complicated, after you’ve heard the stories, of the eccentric creators, art competitions and family quarrels, behind these famed and groundbreaking pieces, we know you’ll enjoy it, too!
